Sherlockians everywhere will enjoy puzzling out clues alongside Baker Street bookshop owner and sleuth, Gemma Doyle—a cozy mystery for fans of Miranda James and Kate Carlisle

When Jayne Wilson’s mother is accused of murder, Jayne and Gemma have to eliminate the impossible to reveal the true killer.
Legendary stage and movie star Sir Nigel Bellingham arrives on Cape Cod to star in a stage production of The Hound of the Baskervilles put on by the West London Theater Festival. When Sir Nigel, some of the cast, and the director visit the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop at 222 Baker Street, Gemma Doyle realizes that Sir Nigel is not at all suited to the role. He is long past his prime and an old drunk to boot.
The cast, in particular the much younger actor who previously had the role, are not happy, but the show must go on.
Before the play opens, Leslie Wilson, mother of Gemma’s best friend Jayne, arranges a fundraising afternoon tea to be catered by Mrs. Hudson’s Tea Room. The tea is a huge success, but when it’s time to leave, Sir Nigel has gone missing—only to be found at the bottom of the rocky cliff, dead. Along with the dead body, Gemma finds evidence incriminating Leslie Wilson. When the police, in the presence of handsome detective Ryan Ashburton and suspicious detective Louise Estrada, focus their attention on Leslie despite the numerous other suspects, the game is once again afoot and it’s again up to the highly perceptive Gemma and the ever-confused but loyal Jayne to clear Jayne’s mother’s name.

In Delany’s delightful third Sherlock Holmes Bookshop mystery (after 2017’s Body on Baker Street), British transplant Gemma Doyle, the proprietor of a bookstore specializing in Sherlockiana in West London, Mass., looks forward to doing extra business during a local theater festival’s production of The Hound of the Baskervilles starring aging actor Sir Nigel Bellingham. When Nigel pays a call at her store, his shaking hands, red nose, and whiskey-scented breath suggest to her that he has an alcohol problem. Gemma later discovers Nigel’s body after he takes a fatal fall off a seaside cliff during afternoon tea at the posh estate of the play’s producer and director. West London police officer Ryan Ashburton, Gemma’s former beau, investigates, with help from her nemesis, Det. Louise Estrada. The suspect list is long, but Gemma knows there’s only one killer cat among the pigeons. Cozy fans fond of Sherlock Holmes will have fun. Agent: Kim Lionetti, BookEnds Literary Agency.

A bookstore owner once more channels Sherlock Holmes to solve a murder.Gemma Doyle, who owns the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium in a touristy Cape Cod town, learns from her best friend, Jayne Wilson, who runs the adjoining Mrs. Hudson's Tea Room, that famed British actor Sir Nigel Bellingham will play Holmes in a local theatrical production of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Although Gemma's a Brit herself, she makes no claims to any Conan Doyle family relationship and is unimpressed by aging actors. Even so, she's drawn into the hoopla and is happy to take advantage of the occasion to sell her goods. Jayne's mother, Leslie, who once had an abbreviated acting career, is over the moon, but even she notices that Sir Nigel, who has a drinking problem, is not up to the task and that his understudy, Eddie Barker, is better suited to the role. As the rehearsals are about to begin, Gemma gets roped into helping Jayne cater and serve at a fundraiser, an afternoon tea for several hundred people who will pay for the privilege of meeting Sir Nigel and the cast. The affair takes place at the stunning estate of Rebecca Stanton, the director and producer of the theater festival. Although the food and setting are perfect, Sir Nigel is drunk and obnoxious. When Gemma and her friend Grant Thompson go looking for him, she's not entirely surprised to find his body at the bottom of a cliff. Neither Detective Louise Estrada, who dislikes her, nor Officer Ryan Ashburton, who's dated her, is thrilled to see Gemma, who's had experience with murder before. True to form, Gemma's removed a piece of evidence from the scene, fearing it will implicate Jayne's mother, and now she feels obligated to solve the crime. With no dearth of suspects among the unhappy cast and crew, Gemma uses her sharp eye for even the smallest details before the police arrest the wrong person. The second in Delany's series, a marked improvement over the first (Body on Baker Street, 2017), features better-developed characters and a more congenial and cerebral sleuth.
