Welcome to the Spring issue

NEWS • Latest angling news from around the UK and beyond

YOUR CATCHES • SOME OF THE AMAZING CATCHES FROM AROUND THE UK IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS - INCLUDING SOME CLASSIC EARLY SEASON FISH

SPECIMEN HUNTING ON SQUIDWARD • Tim Macpherson goes fishing from Lymington with the McKells – a family dedicated to all things angling.

CHARTER BOAT REPORTS

SPECIES HUNTING THE EASTBOURNE SPECIES CHALLENGE • Tim Macpherson goes species hunting with some of the UK’s top match anglers on board Eastbourne based boat Manx Belle.

TENERIFE • Jim goes abroad for the winter and, as always, finds some exotic angling action off the island of Tenerife, fishing for bonito.

BALTIC FISHING IN ÅLAND • In the last issue I described a trip to Sweden to catch sea trout. As part of the same arrangement with the Scandanavian fishing guides initiative I was also invited to go fishing in the Baltic – specifically Åland. For those of you who have never heard of Åland (I hadn’t either), it is a series of 6,700 islands situated between Finland and Sweden at the southern tip of Finland. It is an autonomous state and has been demilitarised since 1850.

THE SEA ANGLING CLASSIC

TALKING TURBOT • Turbot is one of those fish that all boat anglers love to catch. They’re not particularly hard fighters (compared to many other high value targets) but they’re a marquee species and make great eating. Give a boat load of anglers a choice between turbot targeting and catching almost anything else and their mouths start to water.

SALTWATER BOAT ANGLING LIVE-BAITING Guide • It can be a devastatingly effective, and exciting, way to catch, often resulting in specimen fish. But live-baiting can be a tricky technique to have confidence in. Once you’ve mastered it though, you’ll be hooked.

RODMAN VENTURA 690 • Rodman is one of the boat brands, for better or worse, which is generally regarded by boat anglers as being at the upper end of the range - big cruising boats used for big game fishing. I know quite a few charter skippers and wealthier boat owners who own a Rodman, and they are very comfortable, good looking and well equipped boats - I’ve always rather wanted one. However, in terms of day angling for recreational boat owners they’re either too large or too expensive and, of course, they’re not really trailer friendly.

AXIOM 2 PRO • As Raymarine launches a new version of its popular chartplotter/fish finder, Tim Macpherson checks out this new, upgraded product from its successful Axiom line.

BOATS AND OUTBOARDS • Tim Macpherson provides a basic Saltwater guide to getting the right outboard engine.

A NEW EVENT FOR BOAT ANGLERS

BITS AND BOATS

UK CHARTER BOATS • A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF CHARTER BOATS ACROSS THE UK

NOTABLE EVENTS AND FESTIVALS IN 2023
