Two psychics plunge into a dark world of deadly secrets in this second installment of the Fogg Lake trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz.

North Chastain possesses a paranormal talent that gives him the ability to track down the most dangerous psychic criminals. When his father suddenly falls into a coma-like state, North is convinced it was caused by a deadly artifact that traces back to the days of a secret government program known only as the Bluestone Project. North knows his only hope of saving his father is to find the artifact. He is good when it comes to tracking down killers, but to locate the relic he's going to need help from a psychic who knows the shadowy world of obsessive collectors, deceptive dealers and ruthless raiders...

With her reputation in ruins after a false accusation, antiques expert Sierra Raines is looking for a fresh start. She turns to the murky backwaters of the paranormal artifacts trade, finding and transporting valuable objects with a psychic provenance. When North Chastain approaches her for help, Sierra takes him on as a client, though not without reservations. North represents the mysterious Foundation, the secretive organization established to police the underworld populated by psychic criminals and those, like Sierra, who make a living in the shadows of that world.

North and Sierra soon find themselves at the scene of the Incident, which occurred decades ago in Fogg Lake. The town and its residents were forever changed by the disaster in the nearby Bluestone Project labs. The pair unearths shocking truths about what happened that fateful night, but they are playing with fire—someone in town knows what they've discovered and will do anything to make sure the secrets stay buried.

Bestseller Krentz brings the goods with the second paranormal romantic suspense novel of her Fogg Lake series (after The Vanishing). Psychic Sierra Raines has a lot to prove in her career after she is unfairly dismissed from her job at a prestigious auction house. She becomes an agent of the Vault, a company that trades in paranormal artifacts. When North Chastain, a monster hunter who’s having difficulty with his own psychic talent, learns that his father has been attacked in Seattle shortly after acquiring a mysterious relic, he hires Sierra to help him find the assailant. Their search leads to Fogg Lake, a remote lab where North’s late grandfather was part of a project to create psychic weapons. The Chastain family’s enemies believe these weapons still exist and will stop at nothing to get their hands on them. Over the course of their investigation, Sierra and North’s sizzling chemistry builds into a powerful connection that makes them more than a match for their foes. Though the extensive cast proves difficult to untangle, the combination of romance, danger, mystery, and the occult is sure to sate Krentz’s fans. Readers will be eager to see where the series goes next. Agent: Steven Axelrod, the Axelrod Agency.

Narrator Sandra Michelle brings the listener back to the world of psychics and long-ago government experiments. When North Chastain's father is attacked by a psychic weapon and falls into a coma, North seeks Sierra Raines's expertise in psychic artifacts to help find the people responsible. Michelle has a youthful voice, but she still makes Sierra sound capable, adding notes of steel to her voice as she and North are thrust into danger. Michelle's airy tones are particularly effective when she voices Sierra's mother, who is a hippie singer. The listener might wish for deeper tones for the male characters, but their voices do not detract from one's enjoyment of the story. S.B. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine
