GRAND TOURING • The Italian phrase Gran Turismo, meaning Grand Touring, has been used by the car industry to signify a vehicle that fits between a sports car and a luxury car. Beneteau Yachts has adopted this phrase for its sports cruiser range of powerboats, and the new model Gran Turismo 41 perfectly fits the description.
Way beyond willing and able • Imagine you and three shipmates take off to sail across the Cook Strait. Each single-handed in a twelve-foot dinghy. On a day the Interislander ferries were cancelled due to rough weather. Ten-metre swells out there.
The centre of it all THE JOURNEY ALONG MAITAI CREEK TO NELSON • Alex and Lesley Stone and whanau venture up the Maitai Creek, to the very centre of New Zealand.
Make it EZy • EZoutboard is a newcomer to the portable electric outboard scene, offering high performance on a budget.
DETROIT IRON • Last issue we learned that Gerard Richards and his mates were V8 racing addicts, seduced by the mighty Mustang and Camaro track cars of the late ‘60s, an allegiance transferred to the power boat racing scene of the 1970s, strongly contested in the early years by outboard-powered race boats. This issue features the major players later in the decade, when V8 power made inroads, plus some honourable mentions.
MAGIC MOMENTS • New Zealanders have led the world in developing amphibious RIBs, and the latest offering from Assault shows more than a dash of that Kiwi ingenuity.

Power and control • So, what’s it like to drive a big RIB with a pair of 600hp Mercury Verado outboards bolted to the transom?

Taking on the World • World Cat is one of the largest manufacturers of offshore sports fishing catamarans.
ONE COOL CAT • Takacat started in Takapuna on Auckland’s North Shore in 2007 supplying a range of inflatable catamaran dinghy-tenders that have since enjoyed international success. Under new management these days, Takacat is expanding into larger vessels, of which the Takacat Predator T640P is the largest to reach these shores so far.
Parallel parking • This month’s instalment is about how to berth a single sterndrive or outboard-powered boat alongside a wind-off dock....
