19th Century. For years Courtland Becket had denied himself the only woman who stirred his blood, yet he could no longer pretend to ignore the lovely Cassandra. For gone was the girl he had once teased--replaced by a fully grown woman, adamant that they act on their long-denied feelings. It was time for the self-appointed protector of all things Becket to allow himself a taste of the forbidden.

But passion's price might very well prove too high when an age-old enemy returns to wreak revenge against the entire Becket clan, leaving Courtland torn between his newfound love...and his duty to the family that means more to him than life itself.

As loyal readers of Michaels long-running series know, the Becket family has lived peacefully in England for many years while preparing for the final confrontation with their enemy, Edmund Beales. Edmund was Ainsley Beckets former privateer partner in the Caribbean. When Ainsley wanted to return to England, Edmund killed Ainsleys wife and most of his crew, leaving Ainsley with a hodgepodge group of adopted children and his own infant daughter, Callie. The Beckets know that soon their enemy will attack, and all Courtland can think about is Callie, whom he promised to protect. She has been in love with Court her whole life and everyone knows it, but Court still thinks of her as a child. During the ensuing battle, however, Court realizes that his love has changed. But will they survive to have a happy ending? The conclusion of the Becket saga is filled with action and romance, leaving Michaels fans feeling elated, satisfied, and not just a little sad to say farewell to such beloved characters.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2007, American Library Association.)
